There are moments in life when God doesn’t ask you to step out of the boat—He gives you a gentle push. In 1993, Dubby and I found ourselves at a crossroads. Dubby had just been fired from his job, and my own job was shaky. We had two little girls in diapers and no clear plan for what came next. The safest thing would have been for Dubby to take one of the job offers that required travel or long hours, but something inside both of us said no.
We wanted to raise our children together. We wanted to stay rooted in our community. And even though we didn’t have the credentials—or the cash—we decided to trust God and see if we could build a small business serving our neighbors in telecommunications.
The $1,500 Beginning
We didn’t have capital or investors. We borrowed $1,500 from Dubby’s dad, had a single
credit card and started out as a service-only business because we couldn’t afford inventory.
Those early days were a blur of faith, phone calls, and long hours. We worked out of our
home for the first three years, taking calls between naps and diaper changes. Dubby’s trade skills and reputation opened doors, and I handled the accounting, dispatch, billing, and made more cups of coffee than I can count.
We found favor with a few vendors who extended us credit. That kindness gave us room to breathe and grow—but we promised ourselves we’d stay grounded. No overextending, no unnecessary debt, just honest work and good service. Within six months, we were selling small key systems. By the end of that first year, we landed our first large phone system sale to a private college right in our community.
The Power of Community
That college could have easily gone with a big corporate provider, but they chose us. They believed in Dubby’s workmanship and integrity. They wanted to give a young local couple a chance—and that one act of faith changed everything.
From there, word spread. By the end of the second year, we had over 1000 customers, many of them small business owners who simply wanted to see us succeed. Looking back, what made our business special wasn’t just the phones we installed—it was
the people who believed in us. Our story became a shared story of community, hard work, and faith. Each client was part of the miracle God was weaving.
Stepping Out in Faith
We eventually grew out of our home and moved into our first commercial space in
Harrisonburg. That small step forward was a tangible reminder that when God gives you the nudge, it’s not to sink—it’s to learn to walk on water. Neither of us could have scripted the life we’ve lived since those days. We were just two young parents doing our best to trust God, one step at a time.
The Lesson We Carry
When everything feels uncertain—when you can’t see what’s next—remember this:
God often hides miracles inside messy beginnings. If you’re in that kind of season, take a deep breath and tell Him, “I can’t wait to see what kind of masterpiece You make out of this mess.” Sometimes the greatest blessings begin with what feels like being “kicked out of the boat.”
